Why are UGA students so blind?

Why do UGA students think that only UGA students live in Athens? This city certainly makes money off the students, but some of us live here *during* school holidays as well. The city doesn't revolve around the 18-22 year olds that live here for 8 months a year.

I would Imagine not, since The state controls the universities, and the state alsogives it's power to the counties (i.e. the state created counties, therefore they can take them away or do whatever they want)
Therefore, the University shouldn't have to pay taxes to the county, but to the state if anyone.
It would be nice though

shouldn't the university pay some taxes on the land then if they're so helpful?

Actually, Athens has one of the highest poverty rates in the country, and if it weren't for the business that UGA students bring to the area, it would be even worse. The University also provides jobs for Athens area residents (jobs that students usually are "too good" to accept). So technically, this community does revolve around the University.

That being said, I don't think it's an excuse for UGA students to act like they're special somehow because of this fact. But since you have no specific argument, I don't really know what to address.

My comment about the laws here was directed at the second 3/25 comment. They complained about local laws taking advantage of the students, citing underage drinking laws specifically. I didn't realize I deleted the date when I was editing my comment. I did not assume that you or the person who wrote the 3/25 comment drink: underage or otherwise.

(What grocery store are you going to where they give discounts to students?)

From 3/24:

Politely decline from assuming that I underage drink and that's why I find it difficult to find a place here. I can have my fun without breaking the law/being obnoxious/intruding on others' spaces.

It's not so much the laws that are unfortunately necessary that bug me. Of course, not every Athenian does the following things, but just some examples:

It's the condescending looks when people realize I'm a student. It's the sudden snippiness from the clerk at the grocery store when I hand her my student ID for a discount. It's people always assuming that because I'm a student, I must go out and drink all the time.

Truthfully, I do see myself as a transient; I'll most likely move away from Athens when I graduate. But right now, Athens is my home too, and I treat it with the same respect permanent residents do. It's tiring being defined by the worst examples of our student body.

I agree with the first comment (3/18). Without saying why you know UGA students feel this way this vent makes no sense?

3/24: Why don't you feel welcome here? There are some funky ordinances here but underage drinking is illegal everywhere so I see no reason to hold that against Athens specifically.

03/25/2008 - 08:47

I think 3/24 hit the nail on the head. Even the local laws are made to take greatest financial advantage of the students. Ex. Laws to curb underage drinking = more revenue from fines, etc.

If you've never felt like a part of the Athens community you aren't trying at all.

03/24/2008 - 12:42

Actually, in a financial sense, this community does revolve around UGA. It's the largest provider of jobs and the students make up (I don't have a number) a great deal of the employees in businesses around the city.

To be honest, as a UGA student, I've never felt welcome as part of the greater Athens community and that feeling makes it difficult to a) feel like I could ever be part of Athens and b) to be motivated in becoming a more proactive citizen here.

It's an issue of give and take. We all have to be patient with each other and appreciate that native Athenians give us a community to live in while in school and students provide important revenue to the city.

stupid vent.
you fail.

03/18/2008 - 10:03

What exactly does this mean? More specifically, Can you really vent about what other people *might* be thinking/doing? What's your complaint?
