Sidewalk Etiquette

  1. The sidewalk is for walking. That means everyone, not just you. Move aside if someone's trying to get by you. That goes for people who are slow, have stopped completely, or are in a group. Make way; you're holding up progress.
  2. The sidewalk is for WALKING. It is not free space for you to set up whatever. If you have to set something up you must leave enough room for people to get by
  3. The sidewalk is for walking. It is not a toilet for your dog. Do not let your animal poop in the middle of the sidewalk if you're not even going to clean up after it.
  4. The sidewalk is for WALKING. It is not a parking space. It is not OK for the front of your car to be hanging over the sidewalk.

@ 4/09 - not sure about that math... 4 out of 3 on cell phones?

I have a lot more trouble getting down a sidewalk when I'm behind a gaggle of skinny girls who stop every 5 steps in a big group. If there are at least 3 of them then, 4 of them will be on their cell phones and completely oblivious that there is any other human on the planet.

@4/3 Comment: I think you're on the wrong web site.

@4/6 Comment: Skinny people get in the way too. Change that ordinance to apply to everyone regardless of size and I'm with you.

I've thought about proposing an ordinance saying that obese people need to walk single-file on downtown sidewalks. What do you think?

I'm with OP, especially on #1. However, people are way too self-absorbed to actually pay attention to their surroundings, much less infer that they are holding someone else up.

The sidewalk is also for running, strolling, loping, meandering, traipsing, and also, sometimes, galloping. OR stumbling, in latenight downtown scenarios.

Aren't there more important things to be angry about...than sidewalks?
