So Adrian Zelski has made a big stink in the past about how passionate he is about the Athens music scene and how he "operates" with its best interest in mind when it comes to the decisions made at New Earth Music Hall. I was willing to take the guy at his word since he comes from the "onelovefest" that is Dubconcious. However, I just found out that New Earth Music Hall is now being booked by someone who DOES NOT EVEN LIVE IN ATHENS! That's right, the new talent buyer for New Earth lives in Montana or Oregon.

HOW ON EARTH DOES IT HELP THE ATHENS MUSIC COMMUNITY TO HIRE SOMEONE THAT LIVES THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY?

IT'S A JOB THAT COULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO SOMEONE IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY.

AS A MUSICIAN, IT SUCKS TO KNOW THE PERSON WHO BOUGHT YOUR SHOW IS NOT EVEN ON SITE, LET ALONE FAMILIAR WITH THE VENUE.

This is another move by Adrian and the staff at New Earth that has earned them my scorn and brought them one nail closer to killing off New Earth. Too bad Adrian can't run a venue as well as he bullshits on stage.

These "cynical towny indie douchebags" are what keep Athens running. They are the people who feed into the economy when the college students with daddy's money that have no respect for the town that is providing them with an education run back home for winter and summer break. They are the people who work in the restaurants, venues, stores, and tattoo shops that are locally owned. They are the people who play in the bands that are actually worth something in Athens. I am not a "townie," but I was raised in Athens and both of my parents and my brother were/are "townies." The people giving them bullshit aren't giving them the respect that they need. I don't know about New Earth, I have never been there, so I cannot speak on that, but I do know who keeps this town running when students are gone.

It's obvious (to me) that NE rushed in to fill the void left by the theatre. And that they are using the theatre's playbook. The 1 cent question is what will happen to these scavengers once the theatre reopens?

Athens has a 4 year attention span, so I don't expect most people into bar-hopping will even care about the sketchy characters behind this place.

Still, NE's swipes to keep face in these threads reeks of desperation. Again- if you're worth a shit, you shouldn't have to say a word. Your actions speak for themselves. Peace out you MF bitches.

Went to New Earth the other night (Friday) and saw 8 bands for $5.00 The sound was good, the show was decent, there was a good crowd. The lights were the best I have seen in town. I don't see what the problem is. The person below me, PK, I think has a point that these people commenting about the place are childish and obviously have a personal vendetta against this place. Losers.

I'm not the op or the person your trying to argue with. But here is my opinion on the subject. I don't care if the person is from Alaska or whatever. I don't like new earth or the scum that run and own new earth, plain and simple.

Also, while waiting for your response, I realized that your big issue is using people outside the community for your local entertainment based organization......Please let me know what local bands you enjoy so I can tell you when and where they go outside of Athens for studio work, merchandising, label support, booking agents, and so forth.

I don't think your little rant holds much weight anymore. I am pretty sure the reasons I suspected in my last comment ("Did you lose a girlfriend/boyfriend to a NEMH employee? Did they fire you? Did they not book your band?") is more of an accurate reason for talking trash about NEMH on athensvent.com and most likely www.flagpole.com.

As it said earlier on in the thread, the promoter just moved here from Montana. And 40 Watt books bands that used to play the theatre as well. Part of being a community is welcoming newcomers. Stop trying to make this town a platform for your clique. I am sure if you had the guts to let us know the establishment's you support, I could find transplants from other communities that are employed there. Again, seems like you just have some sort of hang up with places that you don't hang out at. Maybe you should be more open minded, there is no reason to feel intimidated about things that other people like.

Please respond, my curiosity regarding the roots of your cynical attitude are not aggressive. I apologize for calling you names. I would just like to figure out why such hatred. Did you pay to much for a ticket? Did you lose a girlfriend/boyfriend to a NEMH employee? Did they fire you? Did they not book your band? Please entertain my curiousity........

This thread is more about how new earth claims to support the local community- then brings in a guy to book their shows with his company, which is located in Montana. There are people in this music town (Athens GA) that don't dig that, at all. If you're gonna make all these "community" claims then back 'em up. It's annoying bullshit, baby. Can't find anyone in town to do the job? Running out of friends?

And, the place is just a bunch of cast offs from the theatre.

I don't know how prove it, but if you think of a way I could prove to you that I am not an owner, secret owner, and have nothing to do with that venue let me know (please). On the other hand, can you prove you are not a cynical towny indie douchebag? Can you respond on how this venue could cater to your needs better? Is your response (to the both who responded) the best you can do? Basically you dodged any serious response and just resorted to backing up your pathetic little stance with nothing. I am just trying to figure out what you like and get some form of positive constructive rational statement from you.

The only connection I have with New Earth is that I have played there twice since it has opened. I have also played other venues (40 Watt, Melting Point, Tasty World, Flicker Theatre, Little Kings, etc. etc.) and have no preference between any of them.

I believe you are the type of person who has stunted the musical growth of this town and I just would like to see if you have anything to back up your bullshit.

Welcome to Athens. Just so you know, these little towny whiny ass bitches only act like this because they deal with their own shortcomings on a daily basis and scratch their heads wondering went wrong during their painful lazy drunken stumble down the road to mediocracy. It's their fault, not yours. They also spend a lot of time on Flagpole Magazine's comment page ragging on New Earth any chance they can get. Again, not your fault, but their problem. If they had the balls to reveal their identity, as well as entertain us with ideas of what they enjoy in town, you would probably discover that your services (and New Earth Music Hall's) just don't cater to their meager little existence. In fact, since you and New Earth bring something to this town that they are not involved in, it makes them feel less important and less culturally relevant. And that is the core value of the majority of these washed up mediocre indy douchebags.......to feel culturally relevant and hip. So again, there is nothing for you to worry about. Let them sit and stew about why people go to shows they don't like, let them write their negative statements that they, with delusions of grandeur, think are going to bankrupt a music venue's reputation. That can go on and I hope to bump into you the next time New Earth hosts and event I would like to see, maybe in the near future.

Kevin, you haven't been in town long enough to realize how low the owners are. Really, you haven't been here long enough to clue in at all. Give it time.

Once GATH returns, this place will close, if it isn't before then. The smoke had not even cleared the air before this smelly group of parasites moved in waving the "community" sign. It's one long string of bad vibes. And karma is one hell of a bitch.

It really shocks me that the "athens community" that decided to voice their opinions here, are so hateful, and so negative. First off, I moved to athens 2 months ago and have been living here mostly full time, trying to bring the best possible music to Athens. To whoever voiced there opinion above, too bad you didn't have the courage to leave your name, cowardly move in my opinion. Perhaps before you make a complete ass of yourself you should do some fact checking and you would find out that I live in athens, and am at the venue almost daily.

I took over the job at New Earth because I saw the potential in the place, and I love the community that I have found in ATHENS, GA. Since I took over I have brought and booked shows like Infected Mushroom, Beats Antique, The New Deal, JJ Grey and Mofro, Big Gigantic, Ana Sia, PANTyRAiD, Conspirator and the Glitch Mob for NYE.

It really saddens me that you all are so hateful, when all we are trying to do is build a place where the community can gather and celebrate live music.

If any of you people who expressed such dissatisfaction with me doing the talent buying at new earth want to stop by the club, I would be happy to speak with you about it in person.
