I am sick of all the racial tension in Athens!

I was babysitting a 6 year old for her dad. She makes a comment to a black child's mom "my mom won't let me play with black kids". The black mom tells me I don't know how to raise my children right. She calls me racist. I tried to tell her that I wasn't the girl's mom. She wouldn't listen. I can't change how they raise their child. Given some space maybe she will see that not all blacks are bad. She knows what she's told (mom says not to play with blacks) & what she sees (her black neighbors bully her & recently broke into her house, black lady is yelling at my babysitter).

I have been wrongly accused of being racist & humiliated for something that is out of my control. I teach tolerance & respect to my kids. We have black friends. I teach black children. It is so frustrating to be treated like this!
Don't kill your allies in the process of defending yourself from the enemy.

Being that I grew up in Athens and being a Iraqi veteran who still serves, it hurts to read these posts. You people have malice in your heart. Dont worry you will answer to someone higher than, the people who taught you racism. I have a son thats half white half black and he has to grow up in a world with people like you. I dont steal or rob and i grew up in the worst neighb orhood in Athens. But I know more white people that steal, rob and cheat. A lot of times the stats do not show the white people that do not get caught. Whites run this country and control the way we think. Education in this country is based off of that. This country was stolen by whites and then used free slave labor to build it. Thats why we have so many problems today. Its like anything else if the foundation iis wrong then everything else will bw wrong.reply at reman357357@yahoo.com.

To the poster who argued against the idea that blacks are more likely to commit crimes than whites - A subsequent United States Department of Justice report which surveyed homicide statistics between 1974 and 2004 stated that of the crimes surveyed, 52.1% of the offenders were Black. But Blacks comprise only 12.1 percent of the U.S. population. You do the math.

seriously, i think some of you have never talked to a black person and the arguments that you are making sound like you are trying to say that a person is more liable to commit a crime if he/she is black. If you really think that you are completely ignorant. You are the ones who need an education.

Sure there is tension. Is it not justified? I think it is. Since Clarke County has nearly 3X more crime than the average Georgia county. Not to mention the poor economic conditions where Clarke residents recieve nearly 2X more food stamps, have 2X more abortions, and have a higher poverty rate than the rest of Georgia.( http://www.georgiastats.uga.edu/counties/059.pdf ). I'm just guessing that most of this does not apply to the 30,000 something mostly white University students in the area. Of all of the crimes the white victimization rate of very violent crimes pales in comparison to the black victims. However the black offender rate is exponentially greater. That is even going by reported crime not convictions.

Nationally, carjacking offenders have been overwhelmingly black. So people should not get upset when people lock their doors and roll up their windows when driving past the projects. Where chances are they will pass a group african american kids who should be in school at that time.

The numbers are there for the looking. Most violent crimes are perpetrated by blacks on blacks, then by blacks on whites. If more stats are needed I'd be happy to find them.

Education is key. You can honestly tell those who have had the opportunity and those who haven't. Obviously the neighbor hasn't. Hopefully the girl will.
