Having a Georgia plate does not mean you own the road!

So, in this past week I have almost had my car hit a number of times. Thank goodness for growing up around Boston drivers, who can narrowly avoid accidents with defensive driving on a daily basis.

So, if I am in the RIGHT LANE on a street, and you are making a LEFT TURN from an entrance on the LEFT SIDE of the street, there is NO REASON why you should enter my lane at all, let alone be trying to come into my lane in the EXACT same spot my car is already in! (thanks person in Georgia state owned pickup truck on East Campus... and I always go at or below the speed limit on that loop, were you drunk?!)

If I am in a parking lot, driving straight by a row of spots (aka right of way) and when I started going, your reverse lights were nowhere to be seen... where do you get off jamming it into reverse and peeling out all at once, all without even LOOKING BEHIND YOU (yes, you dumba**, you aren't supposed to use just a SINGLE side mirror to pull out backwards... you turn your a** around and LOOK OUT THE BACK WINDOW!!) The a** end of your stupid little hatchback just about made it's own personal imprint right into the center of the passengers side of my car... it was no thanks to you that it was avoided, as you CONTINUED backing out ALL THE WAY after I swerved and stopped my car, since I had no idea what you were doing next. Also, stupid b**** at Raceway in the middle of the day, don't you make stupid gestures at me while waiting behind me at the stoplight after almost hitting me, the only reason I could think of is because you saw my plate was from out of state and you decided that means you should be able to magically get away with anything in your car when it applies toward possibly damaging mine, whether it is illegal or not. Yes, I gave you the finger, and YES I leaned on my horn, if only to let your dumb a** know my car existed as you CONTINUED to back out after the very near hit! Get over it and go back to driving school!

That's enough of that for now, but can I just say... Just because I have an out of state plate, it does not mean myself or my family has any money to buy a new car if mine ends up damaged... hell, it is on it's last legs, I am broke, and my family is more broke than me - and to you dumba**es who have almost managed to ruin my ability to live, work, and attend school in your state, please recognize that other people drive on YOUR roads too.
If you wish so badly that I would let you go because getting there two seconds faster would help so much, give me a clue that you are that seriously stupid enough to think that will help - so I can avoid you hitting me... use a BLINKER, put your car in reverse a few seconds before actually backing up - that way your REVERSE LIGHTS come on! Okay, okay? You got it? Good... now don't make me shove your license back in that cereal box you got it from!

One thing I do hate about driving in Athens especially on the 10 is that folks continuously drive in the left lane going 10 miles per hour and won't move when you come up behind them and oh and another thing, when merging into a freeway you are supposed to slow down or match the speed of traffic, why do I have to merge into the right lane for you?

The main difference between Boston drivers and Athens drivers is when Boston drivers cut you off, they know they're being d!cks. (I've been saying this for years since I moved down here and you are now the third person to independently confirm it). Bad drivers are everywhere; I agree. It's a matter of what you prefer/are used to: someone who doesn't have a clue as to what right of way is (Athens), or someone who knows but doesn't care and flicks you off as they drive right in front of you (Boston).

What's funny about Athenians not understanding right of way (and I know they might not be from here but this happens here more than anywhere else I've lived) is when THEY have the right of way and just sit there waiting for you to go because they approached Driver's Training class with the same attention to detail they approach high school (don't get defensive - you're 47th in the country).

I really don't think having a different state's plate matters...at all! It's never crossed my mind to be mad at someone's driving because they're out of state. Don't blame it on Georgians just because you want someone to be mad at.

I agree with the comment about bad drivers existing everywhere. I am a native of Georgia, and I can honestly say that I've never been biased against another driver because of the state listed on the license plate. A bad driver is a bad driver--don't care where you're from, just don't involve me in an accident. However, having lived in Athens for many, many years, I have to say that there are a lot of exceptionally bad drivers on the roads here. Prince Avenue is THE WORST. It's a death trap. I used to live at the far end of Prince and, every day when I went to and from work, I had to actually mentally prepare for the drive, LOL. It was like going into battle or something. What can I say? You might be a great driver, but it's the other drivers that you have to look out for. Good points from the original poster and the people commenting.

I certainly agree with your rant about people not knowing how or being able to make a left turn. It's a 90-degree turn! It's not a 45-degree slant across the double-yellow lines and into the oncoming traffic. Turn the effing steering wheel! I've had to slam on brakes many times while I was approaching a stop because lazy morons were slanting across an intersection with at least 2 of their wheels over the double-yellow line. BTW: That is HUGE points on your driver's license record if you fail to control your vehicle and fail to maintain your lane!

Learn to turn left or just stick to making right turns only!

Maybe you should drive *more* attentively.

The parking lot incident:

The fact that you consider yourself as having the right of way, implies a lot about the way you maneuver through parking lots. Assume this kind of stuff is going to happen, and you can prevent being in these situations. You had to swerve? If you were paying attention, and traveling slower--10mph--you would have been able to stop on a dime without the knee-jerk reaction of swerving. If you had been paying attention, you would have seen the other driver enter their car, and should have preemptively slowed, or stopped to let them out of their space. Assume you don't have the right of way, and you can avoid a lot of these incidents.

Consider that maybe the problem is a little bit your fault...

Hate to break it to ya, but this happens everywhere. Granted, I have Georgia plates now, but I lived up north for most of my life and drive there every year, and the same type of stuff happens.

Plus, I doubt anyone was looking at your license plate (especially while backing up...wtf???) and purposefully trying to piss you off because you're from Boston. Guess who care that you're from out of state? Pretty much no one. Asshole drivers are out there, it's just something we all have to deal with, unfortunate as that may be.
