Athens is the jam--NOT.

I basically hate this whole f***ing town. Its like a small town with a big-city napoleon complex. Everyone here thinks they''re a little more cultured and intelligent than they actually are; everyone has to be "in the know" about the most current lame indie restaurant/band/beer brand. Parties are just a group of people talking about how their favorite beer brand/trip backpacking through Europe/former film professor is subtly better than everyone else''s. I went to undergrad here and liked it ok, but always felt like an outsider because I was just disgusted by the level of pretension, smugness, and self-consciousness exhibited by all students. I spent two years at a rival school and the atmosphere was so much better-- so much more relaxed. The people weren''t idiots; they just were smart enough to know how NOT to act. Now I''m back and working here and everything is that much worse. As the University gets better (on PAPER-- sometimes high school GPA does not equate to real intelligence), the people get more and more pretentious, while simultaneously getting stupider and more lemming-like. Even the fratty types posture obnoxious sophistication. This place has no quirks or redeeming values-- it is just a collection of wannabe intellectuals and bad artists, retreading the same old crap. Can''t wait to get out of where when my time is up.

I feel bad for saying you don''t fit in anywhere. However, now that I''m rereading your original post, you are kind of a butthole. (ha, ha that''s my best apology ever)

Good riddance! Don''t let the door hit you on the way out!

And if Rolling Stone said it, it must be true.

I''ve found the main reason for not being happy in a certain town is all linked to your attitude, but Rolling Stone Magazine called Athens the #1 best college town in America for a reason...

To the first comment on 1/9: How can you say beer is not culture? Beer has been around for thousands of years and is an integral part of human history. If you want to knock Athens, or the current student body, or whatever, fine, but for the love of God, don''t knock beer!

Hey! I can''t wait for you to get out of here when your time is up either! Maybe you just don''t fit in anywhere. I went to undergrad here and now I''m back for work and, sure, there''s a bunch of spoiled morons, but there''s also 100,000+ other people in Athens who I haven''t had time to judge quite yet.

Living in a university town in awesome if you get off your high horse and look around for something you might actually like.

Um, where did you go before? Now, if you want to claim that UGA kids are pretentious and entitled, fine, but not in any intellectual or cultured way. Most people I''ve met avoid culture like the plague. Knowing a lot about beer or some crap band is not culture. And all I overhear is what chicks did what frat boys and who missed a pass on Saturday. I think I''d kill to have one decent conversation about film that didn''t involve Reese Witherspoon.

It''s weird, because I can''t wait to get out of here for the exact opposite reason - all I meet are people act like knowing something or having an opinion is the worst possible thing.

Aw C''mon now!
I think you might be exposed to the wrong crowds...

And I think the Fratty/Guido types are multitudes worse; at least the indie kids care about something other than muscles and Jagerbombs...
