Address your site issues!

With the old design, users could see, at a glance, a topic and all of the responses. With the new design, users have to drill down to see all that content.

I realize many blogs make the user drill down for comments. However, with AthensVent, the comments really are the content. People prefer to see it without having to click and click.

I know it is tempting for "web designers" to use the latest technology, and this is a case in point of a designer using technology for technology's sake, while ignoring the main function of the object.

Make it so users can see both the topic and the comments instantly, without needing to dig into the site, and you will have a more lively site.

In short, implementing new blog features have drained fun out of the original vision of the site. Wake up!

I'm the OP, and just want to say I like the changes too :-)

I was not trying to come off as a bitch, but maybe my tone was influenced by the general tone of a bitch site.

It is more fun to navigate to AthensVent, and see at a glance the call-and-response of the topics- without having to click down into the site.

So, it's great to land here and be able to get a vibe with a simple glance. My entertainment quotient just rose, much appreciated!

Thanks vent team. I'm already liking the update!

10/12/2010 - 10:25

And to the poster about the vents/comments not showing up. There is a cache on this site that was set high and was not allowing new posts to show up right away. We thought this was corrected already, but must have been an oversite. There is a wait period of 1 minute set now and it seems to be working correctly. Please post to the site if you are having problems.

Happy venting! The Athens Vent Team.

Alright to address some of your issues we have updated the site. Hopefully this will make things easier on the long time users.

I agree with the responder that you make assumptions about what the site is really intended for. In fact, the first response to this vent is classic and I can tell you it was not from the designers of the site. That is what this site is all about. You can freely post whatever comment that you want at any time. In fact, the reason this site was created is because the original author had no real locally centric place to vent about frustrations in Athens.

So here is the problem of this site. There are lot's of great vents/comments on here that are likely still relevant. Most users will never see them because they "never" scroll past the first page. So there needs to be another way to engage users into looking past the most recent vent/comment.

The recent changes are the latest result of that effort. You can now see the latest vent at the top of the page and "also" see the most recent 3 comments for that vent. Hopefully that is enough to get engaged on the topic.

Next up is the recent comments section that shows you the title of the vent and the most recent comment for that vent. It currently displays the most recent 3 comments that were made on the site. Pretty cool?

If you just want to the see the old style then check out the All Vents link in the navigation menu. That will show you a list of all vents with the most recent comment for each. This is very similar to the old style with the exception that we only show the most recent 1 comment instead of all of them. If you are engaged in that topic then click through and you can see all comments for the vent.

And one last thing. You will notice that we added a section at the bottom of each vents (when you are viewing the entire vent - not on lists) for related content. These are other vents that we feel you might be interested in reading.

Check out the changes and post away. If you don't like something then you are free to comment.

I hate this new design. It is beyond buggy and annoying. I tried posting a comment about football and it only took WEEKS to show up!

10/03/2010 - 02:49

Yeah, I made it clear in my earlier comment that I don't work on this site (I'm just a visitor!) and thus can't edit it at all and am not the target of your not at all constructive criticism.

Ah well. Subtle troll is subtle.

10/02/2010 - 13:51

I'm only offering some constructive criticism.

I'm sorry you find the "scare quotes" sarcastic. They are used only for specificity.

Anyrate, feel free to delete the thread, or whatever. This stupid thread counts for the majority of action on this site for the past month anyway.

I guess you just don't deal with criticism very well.

Who wants to catch flies anyway? Later tater.

1. a) I don't see how it matters whether I'm a web designer; I don't run this site.
b) The use of scare quotes comes across as sarcasm.
c) If they designed the site doesn't that make them the web designer for AthensVent even if that's not their day job?

2. But you were complaining about having to drill down to get to more content. Not sure what that has to do with using Drupal. How was I even supposed to know you were talking about Drupal?

3. Hey, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. You may disagree but it's been my experience that if you're polite you're more likely to get someone to listen and help.

09/28/2010 - 12:26

1. Not sure if you're a web designer or not. This is a blog…

2. I know Drupal is not that "new", but that's what I refer to- not simply links. I understand how things like Drupal and plug-ins can sometimes "lead" design- sometimes results are not aligned with original vision, etc.

3. I could be wrong I could be right. I only mention it because I enjoyed your site, and the re-design stepped on that enjoyment.

09/28/2010 - 12:21

1. Not sure if you are a web designer or not.

2. I know Drupal isn't that new. But that's what I refer to- not using links.

3. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, right I'm right. I just know how plug ins and templates can sometimes lead you down a road you didn't quite intend. I only think the content (comments included) should be viewable without having to drill into the site.

4. I only spend time mentioning it because I enjoyed the site, and the redesign stepped on that enjoyment.

09/28/2010 - 10:26

1) What's with the scare quotes around the words web designers?

2) Using a link to get to more content is not the latest technology. There's always been links on the Web. I don't know what new technology you think is being implemented here.

3) You'd probably be more successful in convincing someone to do what you want if you weren't both snobby and wrong.

09/24/2010 - 23:25

F*ck you.
