To the Wallet Thief

What is the point of returning someone's wallet after stealing the money out of it? I don't get it.

Is there some wallet stealing rule of etiquette at work here? Did you just want me to know that it had been stolen and not just lost? Is it a warning that a thief now knows where I live? Seriously, what?

Maybe the $ had already been stolen before the returner found it...

That's possible but the person who returned it left it sitting out in front of the door of my apartment instead of handing it in at the apartment office (which was open when it was returned). Since that's not a very safe place to leave a wallet if you want it to get back to someone safely, I'm thinking the person who returned the wallet didn't want to be seen.

Now that I think about it though, it's also possible the people in the office refused to take the wallet from them and that's how it ended up outside my door. If that's the case then the money could have been stolen after it was left there but before I showed up. I guess I'll never really know what happened.
