I have GOT to stop reading the comment on the online Athens Banner Herald. It's like a train wreck; so hard not to look. But the commenters are complete morons for the most part. It's scary knowing these people live amongst us.

The commentors tend to be a ridiculously douchy bunch but I can't help but read them also. Sometimes there's a gem buried in the manure pile but usually it's the same crap, different day.

I am so glad people agree with me on this! I was really worried that any comments would be about how I don't HAVE to read the comments. I know I don't have to, it's just so hard to look away. Particularly entertaining are the people who say "we" or "they" should "close the University!" I'm pretty sure there's no one living around Athens who was here before 1785, so if you hate living with a major university near by (which, in spite of current budget problems, is still a highly rated research -and cultural- institution), you can certainly move. I, for one, wish you would.

Oh, one more thing: a lot of the commenters ARE totally racist! Remember when that woman was shot and killed in her car at Milledge and Macon Hwy and the shooter was loose around the UGA golf course for about an hour? The comments on that story were so incredibly insensitive. Regardless of the races of those involved, someone DIED that day.

Anyway, yeah, to agree w/ the comment above, a lot of them are racist. I'm just glad I don't seem to actually encounter any of these people on a day to day basis (well, besides when driving on the loop!).
