New Earth Music Hall selling over priced glasses of soda and ice

A vodka tonic is part tonic, a few rocks of ice, a lime, and vodka. A vodka tonic is NOT a cup full of ice, 95% tonic, and a splash of vodka. If this is how you are going to weather the economic times, by stiffing your customers on their drink orders, then consider me gone. If I wanted a cup of soda water and ice, I'd hit the closest fast food joint where it's likely free with unlimited refills. If I'm going to pay $5.00, then I want some da*n vodka in my drink. It's almost forgivable once, but twice? Come on.

And to the bartender who served me - when I politely asked you if you thought there was enough vodka in the drink, remember that I am the customer. I was polite and far from rude, but your quick comment of "deal with it," was unacceptable.

My girls and I are done with New Earth. There are far better places downtown to spend our time and money.

I couldn't agree more. The Asian douche is the worst! But the drinks are one of their small problems of many. How long does it take a bar to get it together? Working out the kinks cannot be used as an excuse now. I stopped going weeks ago and I can say the same thing for my friends as well.

Simple: Ack ack the place is so pathetic.

A bartender can make extra money by pouring light. At the end of the shift, the cash doesn't equal the amount of liquor poured, so he pockets the difference.

I'm really interested in this theory of how a BARTENDER can make more money by pouring light? Pocketing what extra cash?? Please, enlighten me. If anything, wouldn't bartenders risk losing tips by underpouring? What would their incentive be to intentionally underpour?

11/30/2009 -

I had a roomie years ago (who was a bartender) who did this all the time; I don't think it's a difficult concept, but in the interest of educating the novice bar patrons out there (and there are many in Athens!), here ya go-

Usually the owner keeps track of how much liquor is sold by how many liquor bottles get emptied. He expects money in place of the missing liquor.

If a bartender pours light, then he will have more money than missing liquor. He pockets the difference. That money never saw the register, it went straight to his tips.

What was my roomie's incentive? Cash, baby.

Did he risk losing tips? Not so much, because people didn't tip him much anyway (he was a bit of an ass.) So, when someone didn't tip him, often he'd pull this scam. He said drunks, idiots, and inexperienced patrons were his best targets/customers LOL.

Words of advice: watch your drink being poured, and don't run a tab unless you really trust the place (you can really get screwed with a tab!). With dedication and an adventurous spirit you will find your happy drinking haven.

I don't make this stuff up. Don't believe me? Here's a link that will cover what I've covered and more.

Disclaimer- this isn't directed specifically at New Earth, but at bars in general. Be informed, and don't be a sucker :-) UGA should offer a barhopping 101 class. Life is too short to support deceptive bartenders.

A lot of places don't count liquor that way. I should know, I am a bartender. I don't pour light and I don't pour heavy. I think that over-poured drinks taste just as bad under-poured. I think that the best bartenders know how to make the drinks right, and in turn, make more money. Eventually if you have bartenders that suck... people will realize this and stop coming to the bar. If you really want to stop them, just don't go drink there. I know that it's a crazy idea, but go drink somewhere else. There are plenty of places in the Athens to drink where there are good bartenders.

Better drinks=better money... not underpouring. I have NEVER worked in a bar that counted liquor that way!

12/01/2009 -

LOL, no bartender will openly admit to something like that. Anyway, that's one reason I stopped going to Earth. Thanks for the article, nice reading material.

12/01/2009 -

Don't forget about their &@!?ty attitude and so called entertainment. Womp!

12/04/2009 -

99.9% of bars do not count liquor that way, because, well, it's asinine. And, the bartenders do not make more money that way. The only way a bartender could make "extra" money is by serving patrons and not ringing in the sale. I've been to NEMH several times, and went there when it was Blur as well, and know the barstaff does not underpour. The problem is, particularly in a college town, that most kids don't know what a proper pour is on a drink. I.E., a vodka tonic is NOT supposed to be equal parts vodka and tonic, or more vodka than tonic. Likewise with a rum and coke. However, if y'all are still pissy about it, there are plenty of other bars in town for you and quit your bitchin about some folks trying to give us something new.

12/04/2009 -

I've been to New Earth and Blur. They have and do under pour a lot. Maybe you were too drunk to notice, or work there so you have a biased opinion about it.

We can bitch all we want and go ELSEHWERE! Which I most certainly do.

Keep on smoking. Peace!

12/08/2009 -

99.9% eh? Well, either you own 99.9% of the bars in town or you're blowing smoke out your ass. Maybe you even own a bar or two, or have bar-tended around town, but don't assume you know it ALL.

Anyway, your point is ridiculous. No bar doesn't compare money in the register to the amount of liquor served. Idiot.

Everybody has a different opinion of what the perfect drink is. The best bartenders get to know the drink the customer likes- and serve it to them. They don't preach and tell people what they SHOULD like. What a crap attitude you guys have.

12/09/2009 -

Oh come on. We all know bartenders aren't in it for the money, it's about love, one love! Haha!

12/28/2009 -

Total dump.

01/16/2010 -

Such a joke of a place. The odd vibe in the place is very uncomfortable.

01/29/2010 -

How do you make a horrible place even worse? Add drag kings! Who wants to watch a bunch of lesbians in blue jeans acting black and lip syncing their favorite rap song...

03/24/2010 -

I have to agree with some of these comments. Went there for the first time and I must say it was pretty lame. What is up with the drugged out hippies? And the asian guy who thinks hes the queen of England?

Lame lame lame.
