Crimes in Athens

What the hell's happening with all the property crimes in Athens? I shouldn't have to worry about my house getting broken into for having a nice television (that I worked and budgeted months for, as responsible adults do), or some piece of garbage breaking into my car to steal my spare change. Don't blame it on the economy either - good people persist in doing good things regardless of circumstance. Those that commit crimes like this are a pathetic bunch that should have been aborted way back when.

Let's take this rant even further - we really need to revive the practice of amputating hands for theft. Don't give me any crap about it being "cruel" because it's not; if the law's on the books and well known, as far as I'm concerned, committing the crime is your way of publicly saying "I've got an amputation fetish, please give me a stump." And "unusual?" I can't see how it is, since it's been a part of many codes and cultures throughout history. Shoot, I'm going to write my congressman with this A-plus idea. Who's with me?

Chopping off hands only works in cultures were the criminals can't turn around and collect disability for not having hands.

Being robbed is such a horrible experience. I couldn't sleep for weeks in my home alone after it was broken into. Such an extreme invasion of privacy.
I am not agreeing with theft by any means, I am just saying it isn't right to make such statements as "Don't blame it on the economy either- good people persist in doing good things regardless of circumstance." It is so easy for you to say what you would do if it came down to stealing some spare change or starving. You would be surprised to see what a person will do after not eating for several days. Do not say that circumstances cannot and will not change a "good person". All living organisms strive for one thing... survival.

Hands are not what I would chop off. If unemployment is the source of their poverty, and hence the source of their criminal impulse in the face of starvation, then we should look at the fact that high unemployment is a measure of how many more people there are than jobs. Yet petty criminals have more children (with a greater variety of mothers/fathers) than average Americans - ensuring that there will still be more people than jobs in the next generation causing people to steal rather than starve (and so on and so on and so on...). Vasectomies and tied tubes does not publicly mark the person (which is kind of the point of chopping hands off) but it does cut down on children statistically more likely to be fed by the government and become criminals later down the line.

Yes, I know ANY suggestion that all children aren't God's gift to society is blasphemy and this would never happen, but if we're going to get at the root of the problem...

i have had my home broken into here in athens twice. One of which i was home for and ended quickly.
Cops can not really do much for the pretty thievery
All i can really say is make sure you protect yourself.
Alarm signs help(even if you don't have one) and camera's!(Camera's you can most of the time find at the REstore off Chase St.) .
Sounds a bit overkill but before i lived here i lived in Atlanta. Trust me, it could be a lot worse.
